At Specialist Behaviour, we provide ethical, evidence-based NDIS Behaviour Support for individuals who experience behaviours of concern and require specialised, compassionate support.

Functional Behaviour Assessment

A functional behaviour assessment (FBA) is a systematic process for understanding why a person engages in a particular behaviour : the context and underlying reasons behind the behaviour of concern – pinpointing the situations in which it occurs and what purpose it serves for the individual.

The findings from the FBA then form the foundation of a behaviour support plan, which outlines targeted strategies designed to respond to the root causes of the behaviour rather than the behaviour itself.

Behaviour Support Plan

A Behaviour Support Plan is a written plan of support developed on the basis of an FBA. It translates the assessment findings into practical strategies for supporting the person. A good BSP typically includes:

  • Preventive strategies – changing the environment or antecedents to reduce triggers
  • Skill-building strategies – building replacement skills (e.g. communication, coping)
  • Response strategies – how carers/staff should respond when behaviour occurs
  • Crisis/safety planning – steps for managing high-risk situations
  • Goals and quality of life strategies – measurable outcomes and how progress will be monitored

Putting behaviour support plans into action

Guided by the FBA, we work with you to come up with a person-centred plan and recommend ways to implement it. The plan will provide evidence-based proactive and reactive strategies with a focus on ensuring participants feel safe, valued, and connected.

An effective plan helps build positive behaviours through skill development, environmental adjustments, and consistent positive reinforcement. It involves caregivers, families, and the broader support network to ensure the plan brings about real, long-lasting change in daily life.

Support to Reduce Restrictive Practices

Every person has the right to live free from unnecessary restriction. At the heart of our practice is a genuine commitment to reducing — and ultimately eliminating — the use of restrictive practices for the people we support.

We understand that behaviours of concern are most often a form of communication, reflecting unmet needs, environmental stressors, or a lack of adequate support. Rather than defaulting to restriction, we take the time to understand the whole person and what is driving their behaviour, so we can put the right supports in place.

Our practitioners work closely with individuals, their families, carers, and support teams to develop evidence-based, person-centred strategies that make restrictive practices unnecessary over time.

Developmental Education & Skill Development

Developmental education is a person-centred, comprehensive approach designed to support individuals living with disabilities or developmental delays in building greater independence, essential life skills, and meaningful participation in their communities.

Developmental educators are skilled professionals equipped with a broad range of expertise, drawing on developmental, behavioural, learning, and social theories to inform their practice.

The supports offered by developmental educators span a wide range of areas, including evaluation of the individual and their surrounding environment; joint planning and goal development; skills instruction through evidence-based teaching methods; guidance through life transitions; advocacy; education; and building the capacity of both individuals and those around them.

Educational Needs Analysis

Children and young people residing in statutory out-of-home care present with a diverse range characteristics, needs, strengths and interests. They share the experience of removal from their parents’ care as a result of significant concerns for their safety and wellbeing, such as exposure to abuse and other traumatic events.

An Educational Needs Analysis is described as a process of understanding and addressing a student’s social, emotional and cultural learning needs, as well as their strengths. This involves collecting, reviewing and analysing personal, health, and educational information from a range of sources and determining the need for additional interventions and services. An effective ENA is trauma-informed and takes a holistic view of the child or young person across their physical, social, emotional, educational, and psychological development.

Clinical Supervision

What is supervision ? Who is it for?
If you’re working towards becoming a registered NDIS
behaviour support practitioner, supervision is a key part of meeting the standards required for your NDIS application. To apply, you’ll need to be able to complete a self-assessment, present a portfolio, and get an endorsement from a clinical supervisor. We are here to help guide you through the process.
For practitioners who are progressing through the NDIS
Positive Behaviour Support Capability Framework, our
purpose-built learning program has the tools you need for every stage.
Please note that Specialist Behaviour does not review or sign off on Practitioner Capability Framework applications for practitioners outside of our organisation.

Comprehensive Quality of Life (CQoL)

Behaviour is shaped by a person’s developmental history, relationships, and environment — understanding that context is the starting point for effective support. The Comprehensive Quality of Life Package combines clinical assessment with capacity-building support, built around a specific individual. It identifies the unmet needs behind current behaviours of concern, then provides the plan, training, and ongoing coaching needed for care teams, families, and support staff to respond consistently and effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We’re here to help with information and answers about our services.

Any individual engaging in unsafe or difficult behaviours, their families, and support workers can all benefit from the insights and strategies provided by a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) and Behaviour Support Plan (BSP). These tools help us understand what someone is trying to communicate through their behaviour and help reduce triggers or stressors.

The duration of an FBA can vary, but it typically involves several observations and data collection over a few weeks to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the behaviours in different contexts.

A BSP includes specific, evidence-based strategies for reducing challenging behaviours and techniques for teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours. It is a clear, actionable plan designed to effect positive change.

Yes, we offer training options suitable for both individuals and teams, from foundational courses on the principles of FBA and BSP to advanced workshops focusing on implementation and monitoring.
